The Mid Coast region in New South Wales is home to a rich history that spans thousands of years. Aboriginal History

The Mid Coast region was home to many Aboriginal communities for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The land and waterways provided abundant resources for hunting, fishing, and gathering, and the area was considered sacred by the local people.

There are many important sites across the Mid Coast region that are significant to Aboriginal history and culture. One of the most famous is the rocky outcrop at Forster known as the Bicentennial Trail, which is covered in ancient Aboriginal rock art.

European Settlement

The first European to explore the Mid Coast region was Captain James Cook in 1770. However, it wasn't until the 1820s that European settlers began to arrive in the area.

The first town established in the region was Taree, which was founded in the 1850s as a hub for the timber and dairy industries. From there, other towns and cities sprang up, such as Port Macquarie, which was established as a penal colony in 1821.

Over the years, the Mid Coast region grew and developed, with new industries, such as tourism and fishing, becoming important for the local economy.

Landmarks and Attractions

There are many landmarks and attractions across the Mid Coast region that tell the story of the area's rich history.

One of the most famous is Trial Bay Gaol, which was built in the late 1800s as a prison for hardened criminals. Today, the gaol is a popular tourist attraction and offers insight into what life was like for prisoners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Another popular attraction is the Hastings River, which is one of the largest river systems in New South Wales. The river has played a significant role in the region's history, providing transport for goods and services, and supporting the local fishing industry.
